The administration division provides overall departmental planning and direction. It operates in support of the department technical divisions of WIC (Women Infant and Children), Environmental Health and Epidemiology, Medical, Animal Control and Public Health Emergency Preparedness. The administration division staff (department director) leads or acts as liaison to several community groups and organizations active in addressing community health issues.

Mission Statement:

In order to protect the health of the community, the Health Department provides prevention, maintenance and educational services to the citizens and visitors of the area, other social, medical and educational providers, the business community, and local, state and federal government agencies. Highly professional, responsive services are provided to all customers in a courteous manner with respect for individual dignity.

Community Collaboration:

Community Health Collaborative: The Joplin Health Dept. is a participating member of the Jasper and Newton Counties Community Health Collaborative (CHC). The CHC is an organization of local human service providers in the two-county area including such entities as local and state health departments, hospitals, schools, United Way, The Alliance of Southwest Missouri, etc. The CHC works to identify community health issues of concern and to implement community-based interventions to make improvements to those identified issues. The CHC regularly conducts a comprehensive community health assessment to identify community health issues. Current projects of the CHC include tobacco use prevention projects (www.breatheeasyswmo.org) and healthy behavior initiatives (http://www.livesmartswmo.org/). The Director of the Joplin Health Dept. serves as the Chairperson of this collaborative.

Alliance of Southwest Missouri: The health department is a member of the Alliance of Southwest Missouri.

Joplin/Jasper County Emergency Planning Committee: The Joplin Health Dept. is an active participant in the Joplin/Jasper County Emergency Planning Committee and in various subcommittees of the group. Most importantly, the health dept. is a member of the Medical Subcommittee. The Medical Subcommittee includes members of the emergency planning committee that have roles in planning for emergencies where community health is impacted. One area of planning includes planning for pandemic flu events (http://www.jascoflu.com/). The Director of the Joplin Health Department serves as Chairperson of this subcommittee.

Homeless Coalition: The Joplin Health Dept. is a member of the Homeless Coalition. The Homeless Coalition works in the two-county area to educate community members on issues related to homelessness and to improve collaboration and communication between homeless service providers.

Common Good Committee: Organized by the United Way of Southwest Missouri, this committee works to improve the community by developing initiatives related to income, education and health & safety.
